West Indies end title drought

West Indies clinched the World Twenty20 title with a convincing 36-run against Sri Lanka in the final at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.

The West Indians were the original kings of one-day international cricket but they had not won a global title since the 2004 Champions Trophy.

Sri Lanka suffered an inexplicable middle-order collapse to be bowled out for 101 in 18.4 overs as they chased 138 to win their first major title after losing three major finals - two World Cup 50 overs finals losses in 2007 and 2011 and the T20 final loss to Pakistan in 2009.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene scored highest 33. But his dismissal prompted four wickets to fall for nine runs.

Sunil Narine and Darren Sammy shared five wickets.

Earlier, West Indies scored 137-6 after 20 overs.

They owed their total to the brilliance of Marlon Samuels who cracked 78 off 56 balls and a quickfire 26 not out off 15 balls from skipper Darren Sammy.

Although the hosts lost the toss, all of their frontline bowlers subjected the West Indies to a torrid time at the crease.

Ajantha Mendis bagged four wickets for 12 runs.  Congratulation.
